Hallo? Anybody out there? If so - Hi, it´ s me, Jutta - I have been "away" for a while. Well not away, but busy. Busy setting up my new life as a single Mom of four, back in my home town, in the ancient city center of Augsburg, near my parents and friends again, in a nice 4-room-appartment with a wooden parquet floor. The 3 years of Palatian intermezzo are a thing of the past, as is my marriage. But I am happy to announce that I am again making jewelry, and I have managed to turn this very day from an ugly, sad anniversary into a happy day, a day where solemn beauty reentered our lives: I call it The Day The Fish Came Home! :-)

Ist da draußen noch jemand? Hier ist Jutta - ich war ein Weilchen weg. Naja, nicht "weg", aber zu beschäftigt, um mein Blog zu pflegen. Ein neues Leben als alleinerziehende Mutter von vieren musste organisiert werden, zurück in meiner Heimatstadt Augsburg, nahe bei meinen Eltern und treuen alten Freunden. Wir wohnen jetzt in einer hübschen, großen und dennoch bezahlbaren 4-Zimmer-Wohnung mit Parkett mitten in der Altstadt. Das dreijährige Pfälzer Zwischenspiel ist Vergangenheit, genau wie meine Ehe. Nach einer gewissen Eingewöhnungs- und Erholungszeit mache ich nun auch wieder etwas Schmuck - nichts Aufregendes, nur einfache Sachen erstmal.
Ich bin froh, dass es mir gelang, diesen heutigen, traurigen Jahrestag einer privaten Katastrophe in einen glücklichen Tag zu verwandeln. Ein Stück Schönheit ist in unser Leben zurückgekehrt. Von nun an wird er heißen: "Der Tag, als die Fische heimkamen"!

Let me explain: I had to leave almost all my beloved pets behind. It was hard enough to find an affordable appartment in the city for the 5 of us, let alone a big black dog, a cat, and almost a dozen aquariums. I found friendly, caring new homes for Mollie the dog (which was easy, amiable as she is), and even for most of my about 10 fish tanks, including the indoor pond, with all their inhabitants (which was not quite as easy - but now they live at a knowledgeable, real zookeeper's home and couldn't be better off!). Teufel, the cat, I took back to Augsburg, where he has a new job as couch guardian at one of my best friends' place. And I saved two small tanks with a complete sum of only five little goldies, which I "parked" at another friend's place, on his kitchen table, where I visited them and maintained the tanks regularly... A fact that proved "advantageous" in more than one way, but this is another - more, uhm, private - story... ;-)

Temporary homes - Sie warten auf das große Becken

Zur Erklärung: Bei meinem Rückzug musste ich fast alle meine Haustiere aufgeben. Es war schon ohne großen schwarzen Hund, Katze, oder knapp einem Dutzend Aquarien schwer genug, eine bezahlbare Wohnung für eine Hartz-4-Mutti mit 4 kleinen Kindern hier in der Stadt zu finden. Mollie, unsere Hündin, blieb im Dorf bei einer netten Familie, wo sie in Ruhe ihren Lebensabend verbringen kann. Die Fische waren schwerer zu vermitteln - aber auch hier fand sich eine Lösung: Ein echter Zootierpfleger, Fachgebiet Aquaristik, hat fast alle meine Fischbehälter nebst Insassen adoptiert - sogar den Zimmerteich. Besser hätten es meine Lieblinge nicht treffen können! Und der Senior, Kater "Teufel", kam mit nach Augsburg und bewacht jetzt die Couch bei einer meiner besten Freundinnen.
Die letzten zwei mir verbliebenen kleinen Aquarien, mit insgesamt nur 5 Schleierschwanzgoldis und einem Saugwels, hatte ich bisher bei einem alten Freund hier in Augsburg auf dessen großen Küchentisch geparkt. Dort habe ich sie regelmäßig besucht und Wasserwechsel gemacht - ein Umstand, der sich zu meinem persönlichen Vorteil entwickeln sollte, aber das ist eine andere, mehr, äh, "private" Geschichte :-)

Well, yesterday I moved the two small tanks to our place, and today I set up and furnished the new, big tank - tonight the first two goldies, Ginger and Fred, the highbred British Veiltails, are cautiously exploring their new surroundings. I didn't know how much I missed the soft sounds of bubbling air pumps, the streaming water, the Zen-like task of washing "dirt" aka sand before putting it into the aquarium, the fun of planning and crafting a filter department, the adding of the plants ... it's so satisfying and contemplating! Hey Ginger - why so shy! - Komm raus, Ginger, trau dich!

Gestern habe ich also endlich die zwei 60-Liter-Pfützen zu uns umgezogen und erst mal auf dem Sideboard plaziert. Heute war dann das große 300-Liter Becken dran mit Einrichten und Befüllen. Jetzt wohnen schon die ersten beiden Goldis, Ginger und Fred, die "echten" vornehmen Import-Veiltails aus England darin, und versuchen sich an die große Weite zu gewöhnen. Herrje.. ich wusste gar nicht, wie sehr ich das Blubbern und Rauschen vermisst habe... das meditative, Zen-artige Waschen von "Dreck" (=Sand)... das Filterbasteln und Becken dekorieren... und schließlich den hübschen Anblick meiner Lieblinge. Erst jetzt fühlt es sich hier richtig wie "Zuhause" an!

Taking time in snatches in between normal household and family chores, preparations for moving to my new place and all the paper war with the officials regarding the welfare and separation stuff, and dealing with my health problems - I finally managed to set up my bilingual Artfire Studio, and even listed a few items already ;-)
In fact I have been working on it since spring, but there always were things that demanded my presence more than the shop. But now - drrrrrum roll ...... Ta-Daaaaa! - There's pieces of my handmade, self-designed jewelry to look at and even buy some! :-)

Zwischen all den alltäglichen Haushaltsdingen, Umzugsvorbereitungen und dem ganzen Papierkrieg mit den Behörden wegen unserer Basissicherung habe ich immer wieder kleine Zeitportionen abgezwackt um an meinem zweisprachigen Onlineshop auf "Artfire" weiter zu bauen.
Tatsächlich habe ich damit schon im Frühjahr begonnen, aber in der Zwischenzeit sind mir so viele Dinge zugestoßen, die wichtiger waren. Aber nun... Trommelwirbel...! - könnt Ihr dort schönen, selbstgestalteten und handwerklich gefertigten Schmuck bewundern und auch kaufen, jawoll!

Some talk about me lately in parts of the virtual world, and little info from me - I apologize to my friends. My life train is moving so fast, was derailed in many ways lately, so that it was impossible to keep you updated in time. My comp just is too slow (me too), and with the skull being round on the inside, so that the thoughts can change their directions, it was difficult for me to keep pace with myself and the things going on around me. At the moment it looks like things will settle again: Maybe not the way I would have wished them a few days ago, but when options change, so can do plans, right?

Sorry, Leute, dass ich schon so lange nicht mehr gebloggt habe - höchste Zeit für ein Update; leider kein neuer Schmuck, und auch keine Fisch-Nachrichten! ;-)
Dafür Umbrüche in meinem Leben... in den letzten Wochen jagte eine Krise die nächste, so dass mein lahmer Computer (und ich) unmöglich Schritt halten konnte. Und auch ich musste erst neue Wege finden, mit der neuen Situation umzugehen. Sie ist nicht unbedingt das, was ich mir noch vor kurzer Zeit gewünscht hätte. Aber wenn sich die Möglichkeiten verändern, können die Pläne ja nachziehen, gell?

My life will change from being an overworked, burnt out full-time housewife and mother of four, married to an overworked full-time working husband and provider, to a part time Mom at my own place, married to a part time Dad, living at his own place. Big scaring changes ahead... but after the crises of the last few weeks, I sure don't want to act like the proverbial horse running back into the burning barn. So be it! I hope the changes will enable us to be a happier family again, able to look at the partner with different eyes again, and share more things again than just the bills and the diaper talk ;-)

In Zukunft werde ich nicht mehr die überarbeitete Vollzeit-Mama von vieren, und Hausfrau am Rande des Nervenzusammenbruchs sein, die mit einem Vollzeit-Versorger nahe am Burnout verheiratet ist. Als zukünftige Teilzeitmama mit eigener Wohnung, mit einem Mann, der sich gemeinsam und abwechselnd mit mir um die Kinder kümmern wird - ebenfalls in neuer Umgebung - muss ich einigen Angst einjagenden Veränderungen ins Gesicht schauen. Es fälllt mir ziemlich schwer, Gewohntes aufzugeben. Aber nach all den Schwierigkeiten dieses Sommers möchte ich auf keinen Fall so sein wie das sprichwörtliche Pferd, das in den brennenden Stall zurückläuft.
Ich hoffe, dass der Wechsel es uns möglich macht, eine glücklichere Familie zu werden - den Partner wieder mit anderen Augen zu sehen, und wieder mehr miteinander zu teilen, als nur die Rechnungen und die Windelgespräche ;-)

At least, not everything will change: I had the awesome luck to find an affordable appartment in one of the lovely historical limestone houses in the village I have come to love over the last three years, since we have moved here, to hubby's home region, from my birthtown Augsburg in Bavaria. What's more, I will have my own workspace for jewelry making, enough room for the kids to sleepover, AND I will be able to take most of my aquariums with me - even the indoor pond. Fish are so comforting companions...!

Wenigstens wird sich nicht alles komplett ändern. Ich hatte das wahnsinnige Glück, eine bezahlbare Wohnung zu finden - in dem Dorf, das ich lieben gelernt habe, seit wir vor drei Jahren von meiner Geburtstadt Augsburg hierher in die Heimat meines Mannes gezogen sind. Außerdem werde ich meinen eigenen Schmuck-Studiobereich haben, und genug Platz, dass meine Kinder bei mir sein und auch übernachten können. UND ich kann die meisten meiner Aquarien mitnehmen - sogar den heißgeliebten Zimmerteich. Fische sind so angenehme Mitbewohner...!

Out of the Wired Box - Kupferschmuck, mal anders!

A small step for mankind, but one giant leap for me: I made my first non-wire metal jewelry! No big thing, just a copper hook clasp. But without Tanya's help it would not have been possible! She not only gifted me these perfect, light Burma jadeite beads, but brought me a dapping block and taught me how to use it. Thank you, dear friend - your generosity is unmatched!
Ein kleiner Schritt für die Menschheit, aber ein Riesensprung für mich: Ich habe mein erstes Nicht-Draht-Schmuckstück aus Metall hergestellt. Ohne Tanya's Hilfe wäre nicht mal diese einfache Kette mit Hakenschließe möglich gewesen: Nicht nur hat sie mir die herrlichen, hellen Jadeitperlen geschenkt, sondern mir auch einen Holzanken zum Treiben des Bleches mitgebracht, und mir gezeigt, wie man ihn verwendet - Vielen Dank, großzügige Freundin!

I knew exactly what the clasp should look like, so I even made a sketch and transferred it to the 1mm / 18ga copper sheet, before I started torturing my brand new saw. Well, not exactly new - it's been waiting for a mission for some months now - just like the shears, the hammer and the files. It's alway good to have some extra tools handy, when you suddenly feel the urge to jump your shadow, right?
Ich hatte eine genaue Vorstellung, wie die Schließe aussehen sollte. Darum machte ich ausnahmsweise eine Skizze, die ich auf das 1mm/ 18 gauge Kupferblech übertrug, bevor ich meine brandneue Säge folterte. Naja, nicht richtig neu - sie hat schon seit etlichen Monaten auf ihren ersten Einsatz gewartet, genau wie der Hammer, die Blechschere und die Feilen. Es ist immer gut, etwas Werkzeug zusätzlich parat zu haben, wenn man plötzlich den Drang verspürt, über seinen Schatten zu springen, gell?

For the chosen clasp motif, only a traditionally knotted strand felt correct. I used some black 0.5mm waxed cotton cord to match the Mushroom of Ten Thousand Years and its earthy look.
Eine traditionell geknotete Kette schien mir das Richtige zum Motiv der Schließe zu sein. Gewachste 0,5mm Baumwollschnur passt perfekt zum "Pilz der 10 000 Jahre".

After dapping, folding, bending, smoothing and adjusting the parts of the bold hook, I attached it via two strong hammered Thai silver jumprings - from Tanya's Artfire shop - to the meticulously knotted jadeite strand. After a bit final partial brushing to add more organic fungus structure, this is what my new favourite looks like.
Treiben, falten, biegen, glatt feilen und anpassen des Motivverschlusses waren die nächsten Schritte. Dann befestigte ich ihn mit zwei fetten, gehämmerten Ösen aus Thaisilber (von Aardvark auf Artfire) an der sorgfältig geknoteten Jadekette. Noch ein bisschen organische Pilzstruktur aufs Kupfer gebürstet - fertig war mein neues Lieblingsstück!

My product is not exactly as beautiful and made-for-eternity as the inspiring jades, but nevertheless I am quite pleased with the outcome! Thanks for looking - I'd be more than happy to hear your comments :-)
Mein Produkt ist nicht ganz so schön, und für die Ewigkeit gemacht wie die inspirierenden Jaden, aber dennoch bin ich recht zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis! Danke für's Schauen. Ich freue mich auf Eure Kommentare :-)

Buying Fish Food - Allein im Bonbonladen

I just wanted to buy some fish food. Really. But somehow, I must have walked too close by the tank with the fantails. Well, just normal, boring fishies. Don't need any, right? Enough is enough. But look! There's two special ones in the mixed soup of cheap one-inchers!! Noone will buy THEM. They are ugly. They are abomination, yes!
Must save them. Hmm... they will need space. We have enough already! But.. the quarantine tank is empty... and the filter bacteria need nutrition... else the system breaks down...! Ah c'mon, two more won't hurt. And it was hubby's birthday.. two weeks ago. He might like a belated present. Hey, HE started the hobby, right? What's this? Why is the lady writing a price on the plastic bag with two tiny goldies in it... Sh*t. I must have thought aloud. Well, there's nothing I can do now. Jump in my car, fishies! Stop! Back to the store - almost forgot the fish food!

Ich wollte nur etwas Fischfutter kaufen. Echt. Irgendwie muss ich wohl trotz aller Vorsicht zu nahe an das Becken mit den Schleierschwänzen geraten sein. Naja, ganz normale, langweilige Fische. Brauchen wir nicht. Genug ist genug. Hey kuck mal! Da schwimmen zwei besondere in der gemischten Minigoldi-Fischsuppe! DIE kauft sicher keiner. Gott wie hässlich!! Missgeburten! Qualzuchten!
Ich muss sie wohl retten. Hmm... wohin damit..? Wir haben genug Fische! Aber das Quarantänebecken steht leer... die Filterbakterien brauchen Nahrung, sonst stellen sie die Arbeit ein! Ach komm, zwei mehr tun niemand weh. Außerdem hat Liebling vor 2 Wochen Geburtstag gehabt. Der freut sich sicher über ein verspätetes Geschenk! Immerhin hat ER mit dem Fischkram angefangen, damals, gell? Aber Hallo - warum schreibt die Frau nen Preis auf die Tüte mit zwei kleinen Goldfischen drin...
Mist. Ich hab wohl laut gedacht. Nix mehr zu machen jetzt. Ab ins Auto, Fischis!
HALT! Nochmal zum Laden zurück - fast hätte ich das Futter vergessen!

The red one will be an Oranda, when it is grown up. You know, one of these critters with a funny turban/hood (btw: It's NOT a tumor, just fatty tissue, similar to our cellulite!)
The little one will lose its black youth color over time, and will be a Red Telescope goldie. Well, the color is never sure with these - but the goggles will remain, that's for sure!

Der rote wird mal ein Oranda - so einer mit nem seltsamen Kopfaufwuchs, auch "Wen" genannt. Übrigens KEIN Tumor, sondern extra Fettgewebe. So ähnlich wie unsere Zellulite, nur auf dem Kopf!
Der kleine wird seine schwarzen Jugendflecken verlieren, und sich zu einem Roten Teleskopen auswachsen. Oder auch nicht: Die Farbe ist bei Goldis immer eine Überraschung wert - aber die Glubscher werden ihm bleiben!

You might think by now that "Carats by Carassia" is a jewelry line. I truly hope so ... hey, I have been working hard to achieve this impression! But since last week, that's not all there is to it ;-)
I am not a very creative person, you know, and quite unable to come up with something from nothing. But I know what I like, and have learned to gather the useful bits from here and there, to adapt already existing stuff, reassembling the components to something new, and sometimes coming up with an "improved" or new way to get the desired effect. That's my approach to jewelry making, and you may please feel free to kick me whenever I forget to pay credits to my source of inspiration.
Hoffentlich denkt mittlerweile jeder, dass "Carats by Carassia" eine Designschmuck-Linie ist - so soll es zumindest sein, war ja auch ein hartes Stück "Arbeit", hihi. Seit letzter Woche gibt es aber noch etwas außer Schmuck, das diesen Namen trägt!
Ich bin ja nun nicht gerade ein geborener Kreativmensch, und nicht dazu begabt, aus nichts ein Etwas zu zaubern. Aber ich weiß recht genau, was mir gefällt, und habe gelernt, mir von überall her Ideen und Techniken zusammen zu klau(b)en, um diese dann nach meinen Vorstellungen zu kombinieren. Manchmal hab ich dabei dann auch einen seltenen Geistesblitz, und etwas tatsächlich Neues entsteht. Naja, so ist's halt mit mir und dem Schmuck. Ihr dürft mich gerne freundlich in den Allerwertesten treten, falls ich mal vergesse meine jeweilige Inspirationsquelle zu nennen, ok?!

So nothing was more natural to call the potion "CARATS - by Carassia".
Dann kam die spaßige Stelle im Bestellvorgang, wo man nicht nur einen Flakon aussuchen, sondern auch einen Schriftzug gestalten darf. Ich kicherte vergnügt, als ich sah, dass man nicht nur einen Namen für das Parfüm einsetzen kann, sondern auch den des Schöpfers! Natürlich konnte ich mir das Naheliegende nicht verkneifen und nannte das Gebräu "CARATS - by Carassia".

Lately, I posted about maybe having made my first online sale ever - it eventually turned out to be real! The buyer just was as unexperienced at shopping online as I am at selling on the www. After convoing a bit to and fro with her, we managed to work out how she could pay using her credit card on PayPal. You must know that in Germany, CCs are quite uncommon: granted by the banking companies only to big game, and accepted by some high-end stores only; so it mustn't puzzle you that I don't know much about how to use them. Well, another valuable learning curve for me.
Neulich habe ich von allerersten Vielleicht-Onlineverkauf erzählt - die Bestellung war tatsächlich echt! Die Käuferin ist total unerfahren im Online-Einkauf, genau wie ich im Verkauf. Wir mussten erst einige Mails austauschen, bevor es ihr endlich gelang, über PayPal mit ihrer Kreditkare zu bezahlen. So, I indeed must part with my logo piece. As good an omen as it might be, I still am a little sad that it has to be. I made a matching pair of earrings for the girl or lady who ordered the pendant, to make up for the inconveniences she had to suffer while figuring how to make the payment.
Ich musste mich also tatsächlich von meinem Logo-Schmuckstück trennen. So glückverheißend dieser Verkauf auch sein mochte, war ich doch ein bisschen traurig darüber. Als Trost für die Unannehmlichkeiten während des Bezahlens habe ich ein Paar passender Ohrringe für die Käuferin gemacht, und als Bonus dazu gepackt:

Ich habe versucht, alles zu beherzigen, was ich je über "erfolgreiches Verkaufen von handgemachtem Schmuck" im www gelesen habe - ein Organza-Beutelchen für den Anhänger, einige meiner neuen "Carassia"-Visitenkarten zum Weitergeben, und ein paar persönliche Worte durften nicht fehlen :-)

Off with it to the PO in a padded envelope, pay 8,05 EUR for registered airmail to USA, lean back and wait for the buyer to drop me a line on receiving the mailer - I felt so smug and satisfied with myself! Indeed I already mused about how to "re-invest" the sum that so temptingly showed up on my PayPal account...! ;-)
Ab damit zum Postladen, 8,05 EUR für ein Luftposteinschreiben hinblättern, zurücklehnen und darauf warten dass die Käuferin vielleicht Bescheid sagt, sobald der Brief ankommt. Was für ein befriedigendes Gefühl! Ehrlich gesagt, hab ich mir schon überlegt, wie ich den unerwarteten Geldsegen "anlegen" könnte...! ;-)

3 days later, my inbox greeted me with a note from the buyer (quote:) "Return / hi! I want to return this pendant. Because my mom didnt like." Period.
Aaaaah ok...?! Hey, she can't even have received it by now to judge in person?! Maybe showed her Mom the picture So what next? I have no return policy, but being a polite, forthcoming person (or at least wanting to leave this impression, hehe), I of course will take it back, and refund the price minus my expense for shipping.
Mainly because I hate the thought that my logo pendant would have to stay with someone who doesn't love it as much as myself!

3 Tage später. Mein Maileingang meldet (Zitat): "Rückgabe / Hi, ich will diesen Anhänger zurückgeben. Weil er meiner Mama nicht gefällt." Punkt.
Ach jaaa?! Hey, sie kann ihn eigentlich noch gar nicht bekommen haben, um ihn live beurteilen zu können?! Naja, vielleicht hat sie ihrer Mutter das Bild gezeigt. Und nun? Ich habe eigentlich keine Rücknahme-Vereinbarung in meinem Shop gelistet. Aber da ich höflich und zuvorkommend bin (oder zumindest so wirken will, hehe), werde ich ihn gerne zurücknehmen und ihr den Kaufpreis erstatten - natürlich abzüglich meiner Portokosten!
Hauptsächlich, weil ich auf keinen Fall möchte, dass mein besonderes "Wappen"-Schmuckstück bei irgend jemand ist, der es nicht genauso sehr liebt wie ich selbst!

In a way, I am happy about the outcome. After all, I made some experiences every seller has to go through at some point: A indecisive, somewhat clumsy buyer with bad convoing manners, and the rejection of a lovingly crafted piece of jewelry! Well, tastes are different, and chosing a gift your mother will like is always quite a task.
Irgendwie bin ich ganz froh, dass es jetzt so gekommen ist. Ich konnte wertvolle Erfahrungen sammeln, für den Umgang mit unentschlossenen, schreibfaulen Kunden - und die Zurückweisung eines liebevoll handgefertigten Schmuckstücks verdauen lernen. Die Geschmäcker sind bekanntlich verschieden, und es ist immer schwierig, für die Mama ein passendes Geschenk zu finden.

Hopefully she will return the Green Delight in good shape... I promise I will honor it from now and keep the far travelled lovely as a talisman, as it apparently was meant to be!
Hoffentlich kommt "Green Delight" in guter Verfassung nach Hause zurück... ich werde es von nun an ehren, und das weitgereiste Stück als Glücksbringer behalten. Offensichtlich hat das Schicksal es so bestimmt!

Intermezzo: Goldfish Moon and Vuvuzela - Goldfischmond, mit Vuvuzela

When I walked the dog last night, I encountered a vista never-seen-before : The moon, still almost full, was staring glaring at my little part of the world with one big tomato red eye. Somewhat creepy and beautiful at the same time....
When I had fetched my little digital camera (oh how I wished for a REAL cam, a SLR, at this moment!) and limped back to the parking lot just outside the village, to get an unobstructed view of the phenomenon, I was in a way relieved that Good Old Moon had changed her color to a more friendly bright orange, while rising from the horizon - wow, goldfish!

Letzte Nacht, als ich den Hund ausleeren ging, hatte ich ein unerhörtes Erlebnis: Der fast noch volle Mond starrte mit einem tomatenroten Auge auf meinen kleinen Teil der Welt herab. Wunderschön, aber auch irgendwie gruselig...
Ich humpelte heim und holte meine Digitalknipse (ach hätt ich doch eine ECHTE, eine Spiegelreflexkamera!). Bis ich wieder auf dem Parkplatz am Dorfrand war, hatte die Aussicht auf das seltene Phänomen sich verändert. Der gute alte Mond leuchtete jetzt in einem viel freundlicheren, satten Orangeton - ui, Goldfisch!

Knips was geht, sortier sie später: Nach diesem Motto ließ ich den Mond im automatischen Langzeit- Belichtungsmodus mit den Straßenlaternen tanzen.

Aaaaw you should have been there with me and get the eery spirit of this hot midsummery night, with the cicadas in the vineyard vuvuzeling (don't miss, click - worth listening!) their mesmerizing tunes in multison, and unknown critters rustling in the undergrowth, and a whiff of rosy scents sweetly soothing the senses now and then ...

Nicht sehr beeindruckend, ich weiß. Ach, ihr hättet mit mir dort sein sollen! Die Grillen vuvuzelierten (unbedingt anhören - sooo geil!) ihren hypnotischen Rhythmus im Weinberg, kleines anonymes Getier raschelte im Unterholz und ging seinen nächtlichen Geschäften nach - diese warme Mittsommernacht hatte eine ganz eigene Gänsehautstimmung... nur der betörende Rosenduft streichelte und beruhigte die Sinne ab und an.

My muse and Picasa let me get some kinda psychedelic pictures, when I played with cropping and crisping functions at home later. Well, as I can't get a firm grip on my pliers and wires with my left hand at the mom, the creative juices have to flow somewhere, right? (Ya ya I know I still owe you an explanation on the whys and hows of that new frustrating condition... will come soon, promised!)

Später, zuhause: Meine Muse und Picasa gaben ihr Bestes, um aus den ärmlichen Schnappschüssen ein paar psychedelische Tableaus zu zaubern. Irgendwo muss sich die Kreativität ja entfalten dürfen, gell, jetzt wo ich weder Draht noch Zange mit der geschwächten linken Hand halten kann.
(jaja, ich weiß, ich schulde euch immer noch die Erklärung, Wie und Warum ich jetzt so eingeschränkt bin; kommt bald, versprochen!)

To my Jewelry Friends: She's coming!!

I sometimes have the feeling this isn't for real - but chatting with her keeps me reminded every day of the hard facts: It's just another seven days until she will climb a big silver bird, which will bring her safe and sane to my place... well at least that's what I hope for, what all her friends hope for!
I am so excited. My Best Best Online Friend and somewhat soul sister will really really gather her things and come all the way from Bangkok to see me in person - I feel so honored! <3 <3 <3

I am speaking of Tanya ( Aardvark Silver), of course. She won't just visit to chat face to face eventually, have some fun, and enjoy a vacation (which she desperately deserves after the horrible time life has been giving her the last months, if not years!). Tanya suffers, as some of you will know, from some not yet correctly diagnosed (and of course not ever properly treated!) condition, with much too high pressure of cerebro-spinal fluid, causing her optic nerves to get squished till she will lose her eyesight. Not to speak of the terrible headaches, and neuropathies, and other adverse effects that a compressed and undersupplied central nerve system can bring. Use your fantasy, cause the details are too ugly to be described here in detail.

A certain natural remedy (Ling Zhi Fungus, aka Reishi Mushroom ) was able to bring her a little relief lately, but of course this is just sort of tinkering at the symptoms, and won't be the solution on the long run.

A risky shunt implantation and three (3!) revision surgeries, ending with the removal of the shunt, didn't bring any relief, yet cost her all monetary reserves and brought her on the edge of death

in a public hospital in Bangkok in spring 2010, not long after her artery surgery. (It's unforgettable how you all, a crowd of caring, generous folks out there had helped to make this one possible at all!)

She hasn't had any time to recover from this ordeal, but rather was struggling hard ever since to raise enough funds to come to Germany, where we will hopefully get her into well-reputated German NHS to enable her to go to a proper hospital, with all the diagnosis tools and machines, and dedicated well-paid doctors who will care to find out how this wonderful lady can be helped.

But - there always seems to be a "but", right? *sigh* - all her efforts harvested just enough spare money to buy a ticket from BKK to Germany, and some more to send her goods and supplies here. Imagine: This brave soul doesn't want to leave her customers and friends (you can use the words synonymously in oh so many cases) outside in the rain, but instead continue sending beautiful gems and shiny hard-to-find high quality supplies to them, along with her message of light and love, while she is seeking medical care! Of course I will help her as good as possible, and of course she won't need a dime for lodging and food as long as she stays with me and my family.
Still, some expenses may come up, like transportation, medicines, phone and internet fees and some more I can't even think of at the moment. And she wishes so hard and has been dreaming of seeing some more of her friends in Europe... oh what a bliss it would be to gather them all in one place and welcome our dear Tanya!

To come to the point, this whole rant is basically just another heads up to go to her online shops and buy buy buy what you will need now and for the next weeks! Hey, it's only 6 short months till Christmas, and the main holiday business will start long before that LOL.

Just a Quickie: Auspicious Omen?! - Grund zum Optimismus?!

While I am still working on a lengthy post with many pics about what I have done lately (before my break-down), here some awesome news: I may have made my first online sale ever!
May?! Huh? Explanation, please! Well here it comes:
About 18 months ago, I had set up an E-shop at eCrater.com. Since this venue is mainly US-oriented and offers shipping templates for US-based sellers, plus has an overall awkward navigation, I didn't do more than play a bit and list one item in my shop "DoctorYu-JadeJewelry": The green pendant you can now see with the goldfish in my "Carats by Carassia" logo - my first somewhat more intricate piece of jewelry ever!

Ich bastele grade an einem ausführlichen Post über die Dinge, die mich auf Trab hielten, bevor ich letzte Woche so plötzlich ins Krankenhaus musste. Für die Zwischenzeit hier eine kleine Anekdote am Rande: Ich glaube, ich habe zum allerersten Mal etwas online verkauft! Ich "glaube"? Hä? Okay, hier die Erklärung:
Vor etwa anderthalb Jahren habe ich erstmals mit dem Gedanken an einen Onlineshop gespielt, und einen Account bei eCrater.com angelegt. Diese Shop-Plattform ist allerdings auf USA zugeschnitten, und insgesamt unhandlich zu navigieren, und so habe ich das nicht weiter verfolgt - nur ein einziges Schmuckstück ist in meinem Shop "DoctorYu-JadeJewelry" gelistet: Der grüne Anhänger, der jetzt zusammen mit dem Goldfisch mein "Carats by Carassia!-Logo bildet - mein allererstes aufwendiger gefertigtes Schmuckstück überhaupt, mit einer komplizierten Netztechnik aus haarfeinem versilberten Draht.

I had totally forgotten about this online experiment, when yesterday I received a noreply-mail from eCrater, obviously telling me that someone has ordered the item and I shall ship it to Vancouver/WA!
I was puzzled, I can tell you! I even had to google my mails for the log in data to get access to DoctorYu and check what happened there. Indeed, they say there is an order. Excitement!
By what I have learned from my experience at buying online, I thought it was the right thing to send a courtesy email to the customer, and mark the pendant as "SOLD". Funny thing: While I was meticulously composing my very first "Thank you for your purchase..."-letter (with trembling hands!), four more identical orders arrived at my inbox!
So either the customer is as new to buying online, as I am to selling, or it was just some weird spambot fooling around on eCrater.
Payment hasn't arrived on my PayPal yet. So I guess I will just lean back and wait for things to come...
Anyways, I prefer to think it a lucky sign for my future as a thriving online seller of my own handmade artisan's jewelry! ;-) Or what do you make of this mysterious story?

Ich hatte "Doctor Yu" schon fast vergessen (vollauf damit beschäftigt, "Carats by Carassia" als Marke bekannt zu machen und meinen Artfire-Shop zu bestücken), als ich gestern abend plötzlich eine automatische Email von eCrater bekam: Jemand hat wohl tatsächlich den Anhänger bestellt, und ich soll ihn nun nach Vancouver, State of Washington, USA, schicken!
Ich wusste nicht mal mehr meine Zugangsdaten und musste erstmal meine Mails googeln, um sie zu finden... Dann: Tatsächlich, bei DoctorYu-JadeJewelry ist eine Bestellung eingegangen. Yippie, ist das aufregend!
Wie es sich für einen guten Online-Verkäufer gehört, habe ich sofort eine nette Bestätigungs-Mail an den Kunden geschickt. Noch während ich mit Herzklopfen meinen allerersten "Danke für Ihren Einkauf"-Brief bastelte, trudelten vier weitere, identische Bestellungen in meinem Postfach ein - hä?
Also, entweder ist der Käufer (oder wahrscheinlich: die Käuferin) genauso unerfahren im Internet-Einkauf wie ich im -Verkauf, oder irgendein durchgeknallter Spambot treibt auf der eCrater-Plattform sein Unwesen. Die Bezahlung ist noch nicht auf meinem PayPal-Konto eingegangen, und so werde ich einfach weiter abwarten und sehen, was passiert.
Egal - ich fasse die Geschichte mal als glückverheißendes Zeichen auf. Mein handgearbeiteter Schmuck wird ein Online-Verkaufsschlager werden, jawoll! ;-) Oder was denkt ihr über diese mysteriöse Angelegenheit?!

Piranhas! - Piranhas?

Gaius is dead. I found him belly-up this morning - still an impressive sight! I have seen the likes of him on the fresh fish counters in the marketplace. Julius, Cesar and Little Brutus are unwell, too, gasping for air on the surface...
The 4 of them were adopted 10 months ago by my husband, when a coworker mentioned he had some piranhas in a bucket in his car, and wanted to release them in his aunt's garden pond (!), since he had to tear down his fish tank due to moving to smaller quarters. We never wanted to keep piranhas, but the poor fellows pitied us, and we did some research on how to keep them. Piranhas usually live in flocks and are quite anxious, contrary to common belief. Nevertheless they need a large tank, providing enough room to avoid any quarrels among them.
We first put them in a 130gal tank, which turned out to be leaky - so we had to temporarily "store" them in a 20gal tank. As the juveniles were still rather small and got along quite well in the densely planted tank, this seemed to work, at least till we would be able to find a new home or a larger tank for them.

After joining a serrasalmus board, we learned to our big surprise that our new pets weren't red-bellied piranhas at all, but red-bellied pacus, which often are mistaken for the former, especially when still in their youth dress. Main differences between the two species are, that while piranhas are carnivorous and reach about 1ft in length, pacus are omnivorous - and will reach up to 3ft!!!

Feeding on almost everything we offered, from koi pellets to fresh fish meat and shrimps, they developped fast and doubled their size from 4in to 8in in the following months, while we tried to get them a better home. But sadly, there is an abundance of mispurchased pacus out there whom people want to get rid of, and not even the nearer zoos would take them in. Pacus have a reputation of making an excellent meal, but, though not being very picky, I never could eat an animal I gave a name to!
Thus Julius, Caesar and Little Brutus will have to endure their confinement for some more time...

Gaius ist tot. Heute morgen trieb er im Aquarium, immer noch imposant anzusehen - so große Fische sieht man sonst nur auf Eis in der Fischtheke. Julius, Caesar und dem Kleinen Brutus geht es auch nicht gut; sie schnappen an der Oberfläche nach Luft...
Wir hatten die vier vor einem Dreivierteljahr adoptiert. Ein Arbeitskollege erzählte meinem Mann, er hätte 4 Piranhas in einem Eimer im Auto, die er bei seiner Tante im Gartenteich (!) aussetzen wollte, da er sein Aquarium wegen Umzug auflösen musste. Wir wollten zwar nie Piranhas, aber die Kerlchen taten uns leid, und so suchten wir Infos zur Haltung.
Piranhas leben in Schwärmen, und sind, anders als ihr Ruf, eher scheu und ängstlich. Sie brauchen ein großes Becken, in dem sie sich aus dem Weg gehen können, um Angstbeißereien zu vermeiden.
Das 500l-Aquarium, in dem wir sie zuerst unterbrachten, wurde undicht, und so mussten sie in ein 80l Notquartier umziehen. Bei guter Wasserpflege und dichter Bepflanzung ging es ihnen ganz gut, während wir nach einem neuen Zuhause oder einem großen Becken suchten.

In einem Raubsalmler-Forum erfuhren wir zu unserer Überraschung, dass unsere vier gar keine Piranhas, sondern Pacus waren. Diese Verwechslung passiert wohl häufig, zumal beide sich im Jugendkleid sehr ähneln.
Der Unterschied liegt nicht nur in der Ernährung - Piranhas sind Räuber, Pacus Allesfresser - sondern auch in der Größe: Während Piranhas etwa 30cm groß werden, erreichen Pacus bis zu 90cm!

Mit Koiperlen, Gemüse, Fischfilet und Shrimps gefüttert, wuchsen sie rasch von 10cm auf fast 20cm heran - und kein neues Heim in Sicht. In den Kleinanzeigen wimmelt es bereits vor Pacu-Fehlkäufen, und auch die umliegenden Zoos können sie nicht aufnehmen. Pacus sollen zwar hervorragend schmecken, aber ich esse niemanden, dem ich einen Namen gegeben habe!!

So werden Julius, Caesar und der Kleine Brutus es wohl noch länger bei uns aushalten müssen...

From Plain To Refined - Aber bitte mit Schnörkeln!

Did you know that goldfish were the first animals ever to be bred by humans just for aesthetic purpose? More than 1000 years ago, some rice farmer in China may have discovered an unusual bright colored cyprinid among its siblings in the pond, and put it aside rather than improve his poor diet on it. Over the years, a vividly orange variety of carp fish was established - the common goldfish (Carassius auratus) was born, and turned out to be quite marketable. The nobility soon fell for the new status symbol, and rare pure yellow goldfish were exclusively reserved to the emperor's household, yellow being the traditional signature color of the rulers on the Dragon Throne.
Soon other features were noticed with the always readily mutating goldie spawn, for example a split, or "double", caudal fin. Say hello to the well known common fantail goldie - this is our "Cassandra"!

Der Mensch hat viele Tierarten nach ihrem Nutzwert durch Zuchtauswahl geformt - der Goldfisch war das erste Tier, das nur aus ästethischen Gründen gezüchtet wurde. Vor über 1000 Jahren entdeckte vielleicht ein chinesischer Reisbauer in seinem Fischtümpel einen ungewöhnlich gelblich gefärbten Karpfenfisch; anstelle ihn zur Aufbesserung des Speisezettels zu verwenden, behielt er ihn und züchtete goldige Nachkommen. Das war die Geburtsstunde des gewöhnlichen Goldfisches (Carassius auratus), der seinen "Erfindern" bare Münze einbrachte, als er beim Adel in Mode kam. Die besonders seltenen, rein gelben Exemplare waren gar dem Kaiserhof vorbehalten, dessen Hausfarbe seit jeher gelb war.
Goldfischbrut zeigt die unterschiedlichsten Mutationen, und schon bald wurden andere Varietäten gezüchtet, z.B. Tiere mit gespaltener, "doppelter", Schwanzflosse. Als Schleierschwänze kennt sie heute jeder - unsere Cassandra ist ein Musterbeispiel.

A bit out of context, my newest ring... well, you can say it's more a fantail than a common, and created for mere aesthetic reasons, too ;-)
Delicate yet sturdy, and my favorite style: A bicolor woven ring, made of sterling and copper wire, with a green topaz and tiny faceted emerald rondelles - a perfect everyday match for my unavoidable jade bangles.

Mein neuester Ring hat nichts mit Goldfischen zu tun. Obwohl: Er wurde nur zu Zierzwecken geschaffen, und ist auf seine verspielte Art eher ein Schleierschwanz unter den Ringen, als ein gewöhnlicher Ring ;-)
Zierlich und stabil zugleich, und so wie ich es z.Z. am liebsten mag: Kupfer- und Silberdraht machen ihn perfekt kombinierbar, und die Grüntone von Topas und kleinen Smaragd-Rondellen passen perfekt zu meinen unverzichtbaren Jadearmreifen.

Charlie the Cherax - Tscharlie der Zebrakrebs

We adopted Charlie, a Cherax sp. "Zebra", about two years ago, when a friend decided he was threatening her fancy goldfish. Not wanting to put ours at risk, we put him in an extra 15 gallon Walstad Natural Planted Tank, which he terraformed after his wishes within a few days, leaving a muddy mess with uprooted plants on which he merrily forayed.

Wir haben Tscharlie, einen Zebrakrebs, vor etwa zwei Jahren von einer Freundin "geerbt", die Angst um ihre Schleierschwanz-Goldfische im gleichen Aquarium hatte. Um unsere Goldis nicht zu gefährden, setzten wir ihn in ein eigenes 60-Liter Aquarium, das mit Blumenerde als Bodengrund eingerichtet und üppig mit Pflanzen zugewuchert war. In kürzester Zeit hatte er es nach seinen Wünschen umgestaltet, und übrig blieb ein schlammiger Tümpel, mit entwurzelten Pflanzen, die er genüsslich verzehrte.

Last weekend we noticed him sitting in one spot, sometimes even lying on his side - no good sign, considering that our blue armoured knight loves nothing more than digging and bulldozing all day long. We already feared for the worst, till my husband discovered a wicked plant fiber shackling poor Charlie tightly to the deco root in the tank. Charlie's menacing claws gave us a hard time, but when we finally managed to cut the thread with kitchen shears, he seemed to wave a happy "Thanks - Good bye!" to us before he disappeared in a mud cloud...

Letztes Wochenende sahen wir ihn nur nahezu reglos herumsitzen, manchmal sogar auf der Seite liegen... kein gutes Zeichen! Wo doch unser blaugepanzerter Ritter sonst am liebsten den ganzen Tag das Becken umgräbt und die Erde frisch planiert. Wir fürchteten das Schlimmste, bis mein Mann die hinterhältige Pflanzenfaser bemerkte, die Tscharlie an eine Wurzel fesselte. Es war nicht einfach, seinen fuchtelnden Scheren auszuweichen, aber schließlich schafften wir es den Faden mit der Küchenschere zu durchschneiden. Ich könnte schwören, dass Tscharlie dankbar gewunken hat, bevor er in einer Schlammwolke verschwand...

Due to Charlie's predicament, I spent more time than usual watching him. Again I admired his fancy colors, and the greyish blues and coppery orange reminded me of a pendant I had made some time ago - my first cabochon wrap using square wire ever. It's a rock quartz cab with heavy inclusions of some other mineral... suggestions what it could be, anyone? ;-)

Ich beobachtete Tscharlie in seiner misslichen Lage länger als sonst, und wieder einmal bewunderte ich seine Farbenpracht. Diese Grau- und Blautöne, dieses kupfern schimmernde Orange, erinnerten mich an einen Anhänger, den ich vor einiger Zeit gemacht hatte - Übrigens mein allererster Cabochon, den ich in Draht mit quadratischem Querschnitt gefasst habe. Es ist ein Kristallquarz mit starken Einschlüssen eines anderen Minerals. Wer's weiß, soll sich melden! ;-)

Hallo, Guten Abend, Tach auch, Servus, Moin, oder wie auch immer - willkommen in meinem Blog, liebe Freunde und Zufallsleser!

I have been struggling with the idea of getting a blog of my own for some time now, and decided to give it a try eventually. Hey, if everybody has one (or so it seems) - why not me, too?
Scheinbar hat ja heute fast jeder ein Blog. Also hab ich mich nach langem Hin und Her entschlossen, es auch mal zu versuchen.

I have some interests to share: be it my first hobby, Fancy Goldfish, and some other aquatic creatures I take care of in our dozen tanks;
Vielleicht interessiert sich ja jemand für meine Lieblingstätigkeiten und Ansichten: Da wären erst mal meine (Hochzucht-) Goldfische und andere Wasserbewohner, die ich in einem guten Dutzend Behältern pflege;

Or my other obsession: Designing and creating unique jewelry, with wire and precious gems from all over the world.
Und meine andere Leidenschaft: Das Entwerfen und Fertigen von einmaligen, originellen Schmuckstücken. Ich wende meist eine alte Technik in neuem Gewand an und flechte, winde und webe Silber- und andere Drähte, um Edelsteine aus aller Welt OHNE LÖTEN zu fassen. Schaut es euch einfach mal an.
